Medication Training Annual Requirements

In January of 2008 our RCFE medication training requirements went into effect requiring the initial training for all persons assisting with medication. Along with those training mandates, the requirement for 4 hours of annual training to maintain medication assistance skills is required.

This training may take place in the facility. The topics can be varied, as long as they pertain to medication assistance. There are numerous resources. Perhaps an in-service from your hospice agency on end of life meds would be interesting. What about your pharmacy? Most will do free in-service training. Home health agencies or video training can be other resources. It is important to remember each employee who assists with medication must maintain proof in their file of a total of four hours. Be sure you maintain documentation of each employee’s training.
