Medications from Across the Border

As residents and their families look for ways to cut back on health care costs, assisted living and residential care providers are increasingly faced with the challenge of handling medications purchased in Canada and Mexico.  The two most common questions providers ask about these drugs include: 1) Are they safe?  2) Are they legal?

Fortunately, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration provides clear guidance. According to the FDA:

Under the FD&C Act, the interstate shipment of any prescription drug that lacks required FDA approval is illegal. Interstate shipment includes importation–bringing drugs from a foreign country into the United States.

Drugs sold in the United States also must have proper labeling that conforms with the FDA’s requirements, and must be made in accordance with good manufacturing practices.
