Monitoring for Medication Side Effects

Over 80% of assisted living residents require assistance with medications.  In addition to ensuring safe handling of medications and timely administration, it is also critical to monitor for side effects–which our residents are particularly susceptible to.

There are hundreds of possible side effects, and everyone responds to medications differently, but here are some common side effects to watch out for:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • dizziness, especially when standing up (postural hypotension)
  • change in appetite
  • sleepiness, drowsiness
  • difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • anxiety
  • increased bleeding

Report these side effects and any other change in condition to the resident’s physician.
