Our hearts go out to all of those affected by the tragic events in Boston yesterday. The pain and suffering of those killed and injured, as well as their loved ones, is difficult to imagine.
Providers are encouraged to use caution in playing lengthy news coverage of the incident, particularly if you care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The graphic images can be disturbing and may lead to an increase in agitation or other behavioral changes in residents with cognitive impairments. This doesn’t mean the news coverage has to be totally avoided, but keeping televisions in public areas tuned into another channel may be advisable for the next few days.
