Norovirus Outbreak Prevention
Posted on June 17th, 2014 by Josh Allen, RN, C-AL
Noroviruses can cause outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness in assisted living and residential care communities through food borne transmission, contact with an infected person and contact with infected surfaces. In severe cases, the resulting diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration can be life threatening.
Recently the National Center for Assisted Living published recommendations to prevent these dangerous outbreaks. The recommendations include:
– hand washing
– properly cooking food
– use of contact precautions
