New Fall Safety Law

On April 23, 2008 the President signed the Safety of Seniors Act that will expand research and public education on senior safety, particularly falls.  The federal law directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to expand research, demonstration projects, and studies of falls and the effects of falls on health care costs.

According to the Congressional Research Service, the law allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to conduct and support research to:

(1) Improve the identification of older adults who have a high risk of falling

(2) Improve data collection and analysis to identify fall risk and protective factors

(3) Design, implement, and evaluate the most effective fall prevention interventions

(4) Tailor effective strategies to reduce falls to specific populations of older adults

(5) Maximize the dissemination of proven, effective fall prevention interventions

(6) Improve the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of elderly fall victims and older adults at high risk for falls

(7) Assess the risks of falls occurring in various settings.

The law authorizes HHS to oversee and support a national education campaign focusing on reducing falls among older adults and preventing repeat falls; and (2) award grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements to design and carry out local education campaigns.

Assisted Living providers know all too well the serious impact falls have on the safety and well being of elder adults.  The passage of this law may improve our ability as care providers to successfully implement fall prevention interventions.

One Response to “New Fall Safety Law”

  1. We are looking for some data collection and analysis tools providers have found that are useful on the prevention and reduction of falls with elderly patients. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!
